Love this place! We were Lucky enough to be there at the right time and see all the Buffalo! Beautiful!
Very nice Visitor Center. Nice people who were very helpful. Beautiful scenery.
Everything was closed, slid down the badlands hill, off path and drank a beer (I now feel so awful about leaving established trails I didn't know I was young and had never been to a NP before) and then looked around in awe and took pictures and just could not deal. The hills were like four different colours at once. We heard a literal Rattle Snake. I see squirrels every day I don't hear rattle snakes man the WEST is sick a badlands are amazing. Like, grass and red hills and brown hills and bison in the distance.
A must stop location, if even just for a few moments. Collect your thoughts and you will find that those moments pull you in for hours or days. So goes the beauty of America.
Literally had no idea what national parks were or that I loved badlands but here we are now, I am obsessed with badlands and we have been to over 8 National Parks over the past two years.
We love the Painted Canyons. We stop every time we drive through as the view from the visitor center is amazing.
Just two idiots from Ontario who had no idea what the National Park Service was or that there were painted canyons in North Dakota, or really what a painted canyon was. Saw the now heart-rate accelerating brown NPS sign that said "Painted Canyon Lookout" and pulled off I-94 without asking too many questions.
This little overlook rest stop closed National Park Visitors Centre changed my life.
